As an Ultrarunner who lives in St. Louis, summertime is pretty predictable… brutally humid with “real feel” temps which can rival that of Badwater, Death Valley. I’ve also trained in the dry heat of Badwater, with temps so hot, the soles of your shoes can literally melt… and I’ve learned a thing or two about how best to dress while training and racing during the summer months.
So, What Are You Wearing?
All roads should lead to WHITE as it reflects heat best…which means you stay cooler longer… specifically:
Technical Fabric: a microfiber, polyester fabric helps keeps sweat away from the body and brings it to the fabric surface, where it evaporates. There are many high end and affordable brands which have incorporated this technology; such as Nike and Champion C9.
Headsweats Hat: Not all hats are created equal… trust me on this one. Headsweats tagline is “keep a cool head” for good reason. Headsweats are airlight and supremely wicking… in other words, they “breathe”. Headsweats Perspiration Technology Headwear® is excellent in preventing heavy sweat blindness and the dreaded migrating sunscreen.
|Ice Bandana: Tied around your neck, an ice bandana will help to cool the blood going to and from your brain, which is critical as the neck is one of the most effective temperature control areas of the body. I’ve tried several brands and I personally like the “Cool Off Bandana” from “Zombie Runner”, as it has a chamois sewn inside, so it stays cool and moist when soaked with water. It also has an opening so you can fill it with ice. Very nice, indeed.
